Nick J. Dodd Using Corporate Data to Combat Crime against
Organisations: A Review of the Issues
Corporate crime data (CCD) is a valuable source of
information about actual criminal activity committed against organisations.
However, it has received scant attention from researchers and organisations
when assessing the risk of criminal behaviour in this context. This chapter
argues that CCD requires re-evaluation by organisations as a source of
knowledge that can be utilised as business intelligence to combat crime
committed against them. At the same time it argues that behavioural research
of this 'noisy' source of data can be undertaken to increase our understanding
of crime against organisations. This increased understanding can directly
inform both investigative and preventative strategies at the corporate
level and theories of crime at the academic level. However, such requirements
are not without their methodological difficulties, and these are reviewed.
A discussion of the advantages of integrating traditional research approaches
to corporate crime and direct assessment of criminal activity conclude
the article.
Nick J. Dodd was
awarded a BA (Hons) Psychology from University College, Swansea, The University
of Wales and a PhD from the University of Liverpool. A keen interest in
the application of psychology to investigating and preventing crime led
to him being awarded an MSc in Investigative Psychology by the University
of Surrey. A specialised interest in the psychological aspects of fraud
developed during this period. This received support from the insurance
industry in an examination of the behavioural aspects of insurance claim
fraud. A more recent interest has been exploring the psychological aspects
of pilfering and its relationship to organisational culture and employee
variables. This attracted the support of the Economic and Social Research
Council and an international parcel delivery company. Concurrently, advisory
roles have been undertaken on projects exploring compliance, control and
security issues in the working environment.
