Increasing self awareness:
Assessing risk of recidivism of intimate partner violence and risk
communication to victims |
| |
Introduction:
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is world wide diffused causing
long and short term negative consequences at the physical, psychological
and social level to the victim but also to the children involved
and the perpetrator, sometimes even death.
Kropp, Hart & Belfrage (1998, 2005) have developed a short
version of the original 20 item of SARA (Spousal Assault Risk Assessment),
named B-Safer, or SARA-PV (police version), SARA-S (screening version)
in Italian, consisting of 10 items.
Aim:
To prevent recidivism police officers, magistrates, judge, social
workers, victim support workers as well forensic psychologists
and psychiatrists can benefit from this method because it provides
a structured framework to identify risk factors and establish level
of risk. This helps to set up and develop best strategies to manage
risk and prevent recidivism. Risk assessment is also a useful tool
to help victims communicate the risk they are running into that
relationship.
Method:
The workshop will describe the risk assessment method (SARA) and
how this is used in different countries and will train participant
in its use, with special reference to SARA-S, in conjunction with
victim based assessment.
Real cases both taped as well as written will be presented and
will be used for small group discussion and role-play cases to
assess risk.
Expected outcome:
Participants taking part in the workshop will learn about the relationship
between intimate partner violence and risk of escalation resulting
in killing, about risk assessment in IPV and practical use of SARA-S,
its applicability and limits.
Participants will be provided with an up-dated complete reference
list and resources.
Please note each workshop costs an additional £100 to the
standard registration fee. |
